Visual Description:
Kinokuniya of San Francisco is the flagship store of
Kinokuniya Bookstores of America, the largest Japanese bookstore chain in the
United States. The San Francisco outlet
is the third largest Japanese bookstore in the U.S. and also serves as the
headquarters for Kinokuniya Bookstores’ West Coast operations. The store offers a large selection of
novels, magazines, comic books (manga), and other literary texts.
Approximately 70 percent of the books are written in Japanese, while the remaining
30 percent is in English. The store
also offers videos, music CD’s and other specialty items. The store contains approximately 7,000
square feet of retail space and provides over 75,000 titles, covering a
multitude of subjects, including Japanese and Asian arts and crafts, literature
for adults and children, history, business and popular culture. Prospective Japanese-speakers can also
choose from a large collection of Japanese language tapes, instruction aides,
and practice books. At the entrance of
the store, visitors can also watch Japanese television broadcasts on a large
display screen.
History:
Kinokuniya Bookstore opened in February 1969 in what was then known as the Japan Cultural and Trade Center, a year after the Center was built. The bookstore has been instrumental in introducing the customs and culture of Japan to the United States, as well as providing a valuable resource for native Japanese-speakers and immigrants in the area. In addition to Japanese texts, the bookstore has also established itself as a leading distributor of works by Asian American authors, and also hosts appearances and public readings.
