Save the Date: 2008 Shinzen Poker Tournament Fundraiser

Please come out and support the 2008 Shinzen Program during the Cherry Blossom Festival. They are hosting the annual Cherry Blossom Jamboree on April 12-13 and 19-20 at the JCCCNC, 1840 Sutter Street.

They are also starting to plan for their 2008 Poker Tournament on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Mark your calendars and SAVE THE DATE!

We will also be hosting players from the Osaka YMCA on July 28 to August 4, 2008.

SF JACL - Youth Fishing Derby

Saturday, June 7
Location: San Pablo Dam

This year's annual Youth Fishing Derby sponsored by the San Francisco Chapter Japanese American Citizens League will take place on Saturday, June 7. As in past years eligible youths must be between eight and twelve years old. Youngsters not within the age limit are welcome to attend, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

"We anticipate a good time for everyone who participates in this event, especially for the youngsters" commented Greg Marutani, Board Member. He added, "The fishing was excellent, although one of the anglers had an eagle swoop down and took his trout before he could reel it in."

The members of the Nisei Fishing Club will again provide all fishing gear, including bait, as well as the hot dogs, hamburgers, and snacks for young anglers. Prizes will be awarded to those who catch a fish.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the event by bringing a dish for the potluck lunch for the volunteers.

AARP Senior Driving Refresher Course

Wednesday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This four hour course is for those who have taken the eight hour class and are in need of updating their certificate (every three years). Graduates may be able to qualify for a discount on auto insurance (*Please check with your insurance agent). The refresher course will be held at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter St. in San Francisco Japantown. The cost is $10 for JCCCNC or AARP members or $15 for non-members.

Japan Society - Baseball Night

Thursday, June 12 - First Pitch at 7:15 p.m.
McAfee Coliseum

Join the Japan Society for some summertime fun at the 2nd Annual Japan Society Baseball Night when the Oakland A's take on the New York Yankees. Come eat, drink, and watch baseball with your Japan Society Friends!

The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. at the McAfee Coliseum in Oakland. Click here for a map to the Coliseum.

Parking at the Coliseum Lot is $15 for cars (no bills larger than $20 accepted). Public transportation is recommended via Oakland Coliseum BART). The cost for this event is $60 members, $75 non-members. Ticket price includes one field level ticket, $10 food voucher and all transaction fees. Vouchers can be used at any concession stand in the Coliseum. Available items include BBQ, pizza, soda, alcoholic beverages, etc.

Pine's Chicken Teriyaki Bazaar

Sunday, June 15 from 11 a.m.
Pine UMC, SF

Pine United Methodist Church, located at 426 - 33rd Ave. between Clement and Geary in San Francisco, will host its 41st Annual Chicken Teriyaki Bazaar on Sunday, June 15, from 11 to 4 p.m.

Chicken Teriyaki bento boxes will be sold for $9. Other food items available for purchase will include manju, udon, hamburgers, hot dogs and chirashi sushi.

Launched in 1967, the bazaar was the brainchild of Pine UMC member Gus Toba. Every year, thousands of people flock to the church for its famous chicken teriyaki.

Over 2,000 pieces of chicken will be marinated overnight and barbecued throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning for this important fundraising event. For those on the go, a curbside pick-up station will be setup in front of the church.

4th Annual Jtown Asian/Pacific Islander Craft Fair & Island Jam

Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC's) 4th annual Japantown Asian/Pacific Islander Craft Fair and Island Jam presented by Union Bank of California will be on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter Street.

The Japantown Asian/Pacific Islander (API) Craft Fair will showcase many unique API crafts, gift items, and clothing vendors for an exciting shopping experience!

Island Jam Performers include: Manuia Polynesian Review, Ka Ehu Kai, JCCCNC Hula, Kaiulu, Touch of Polynesia, Kedalaulani Halau O'Lapa o Laka, and Merahi o Tehani.

Admission for the event is free and there will be validated parking for the Japan Center Garage.

Pride Sunday Worship at Pine UMC

Pine United Methodist Church in San Francisco will host an LGBT Pride Sunday worship service on June 22.

This contemporary-style worship will begin at 11 a.m. The guest preacher will be Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Leung, who leads the LGBT Bible Study Small Group at Pine UMC.

In 1994, Pine UMC voted to declare itself a "reconciling church" and became the first Asian American church in the country to do so.

As a reconciling church, Pine is part of the larger Reconciling Ministries Networks (RMN), which is a growing movement of United Methodist individuals, congregations, campus, ministries, and other groups who are working toward the full participation of all the people in the United Methodist Church regardless of sexual orientation.

Pine UMC also supports and participates in the Network on Relgiion and Justice for Asian Pacific Islander, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender People (NRJ-API-LGBT) which is housed at the Pacific School of Religion at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.

On Sunday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., NRJ will have a booth during the post-Pride Parade party at the API Pavillion on Polk Street. Former Pine UMC minister Rev. Lloyd Wake will be on hand to provide "blessings" to all who wish to receive one.

Nikkei Lions Installation Dinner

The Nikkei Lions Club will hold an installation dinner honoring incoming president Steven Hirabayashi on Sunday, June 22, at Honu's Island Grinds and Bar, 1737 Buchanan St. (near Sutter) in San Francisco's Japantown.

The dinner starts at 7 p.m., preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. Hawaiian shirts or similar attire is requested.

Hirabayashi will be installed along with the other new officers for 2008-09. The evening's special guest will be Lions District Governor Maxine Frazier.

The host is 1997 Miss Universe, Brook Lee, who has hosted programs on ESPN, the Travel Channel, and E! Entertainment Channel.

Japanese Language Courses Offered at Nobiru-Kai

Japanese language courses for beginner and advanced students are now in session at the Nobiru-Kai office located at 1840 Sutter St. Suite #207 in San Francisco's Japantown. Students can study Japanese in a ligh-t mood at competitive prices. Classes offered are:

*Level 1 (beginning) - Saturdays 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.

*Level 2 (Beginning) - Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

*Level 4 (Advanced) - Saturdays 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
