NSF Presents "Bringing Our Communities Together"
July 5 at 6 p.m.
Palace of Fine Arts, SF
The Nihonmachi Street Fair will present an evening filled with great
music and the spirit of Aloha featuring award winning music of Hawaii
on Saturday, July 5 at 6 p.m. at the San Francisco Palace of Fine
Arts, 3301 Lyon Street.
Featuring Hawaii's award winning Hapa's Barry Flanagan & Nathan
Aweau with performances by local Halau groups.

Okinawan Cultural Celebration at Akabanaa

Akabanaa, the Okinawan shop on the second floor of the Miyako Mall in San Francisco Japantown, will be celebrating the
second anniversary of its opening on Saturday, July 5.
The Chikaho-Kai classical Okinawan dance troupe will be performing. The celebration will also feature famous
Okinawan sanshin player, Toru Yonaha.
The leaders of Chikaho-Kai, Tomoko Makishi, Yoko Fukumura, and Junichi Ohshiro, will perform two Okinawan dance numbers from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
and from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. In the evening, Yonaha will give a sanshin performance from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
and then will be signing autographs from 7:30 p.m.
Yonaha began learning sanshin and Ryukyuan dancing at the age of three, and has won many awards in sanshin, taiko, and classical
dance at traditional Ryukyuan entertainment contests. He has also performaed at major events such as the centennial of the Hawaii-Okinawa
diaspora in 2000, and has performed all over Asia, U.S., Canada, and France.
On the day of the event, the store will close temporarily from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in order to prepare.

Better Neighborhood Plan - Town Hall Meeting

WHERE: JCCCNC (Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California), 1840 Sutter Street
WHAT: A Brief Check-In on the Plan and An Update on the Historic Resource Survey
This meeting is intended to provide you with a general update on the status of the planning process. We don’t have all the answers yet, but
we want to let you know where we are in development of the plan and we welcome your questions.
What this meeting will cover:
- An update on the plan schedule
- An in-depth presentation on the historic resource survey, potential resources and preservation strategies
- Although there are no final decisions about the renovation of Miyako and Kintetsu Malls, we will have an update on what has been done
- Plenty of time for questions and answers

Old Timers' Basketball Tournament - A Spirited Event

Looking for something to do this weekend? Come cheer on your favorite
old timers at the annual Old Timers’ Basketball Tournament on Saturday,
July 12 and Sunday, July 13, 2008 in the Japanese Community and
Cultural Center of Northern California's gymnasium, located at 1840
Sutter Street, SF, CA 94115.
Although the Old Timers’ Basketball Tournament is one of Kimochi’s
lesser known fundraisers, it is still a very vital, worthwhile event.
It’s a fun opportunity for people to demonstrate their youthfulness
through physical activity typically reserved for their children
and grandchildren. Participants especially look forward to catching
up with old friends and showing that they still have some smooth
moves!

K.O.'s Camp for Girls

Please join the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern
California, 1840 Sutter Street for a basketball camp that will review
the fundamentals, help players improve their skills, teach sportsmanship
and the importance of teamwork. This is an excellent opportunity
to make new friends and have fun!
Kara began coaching for the Buddhist Church of San Francisco Youth
Athletic Organization as a college student. Additional coaching
experience has been with the JV Basketball team at Convent of Sacred
Heart, where the JV team ended the 2007 season with a perfect 17-0
record. This fall she will be the head coach for the varsity team.
Ages: For girls entering 5th to 8th grade in the fall

SF Fukuoka Kenjin Kai to Hold Cooking Class
Tuesday, July 15 from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m.

SF Fukuoka Kenjin Kai will hold the third in a series of cooking classes with Kyoko Inouye and Fusako Ayabe demonstrating how to
prepare daifuku mochi and tsukemono on Tuesday, July 15, noon to 2:30 p.m. in
the kitchen of Konko Church of San Francisco, 1755 Laguna Street in San Francisco's Japantown.
The cost is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. There will be no lunch served but there will be a tasting after the demonstration.
Limited parking will be available behind the church off of Laguna Street. Those interested should RSVP by July 12 to Fusako Ayabe at (925) 672-4063.

Instructors: Kimika Soko Takechi and Larry Sokyo Tiscornia
Learn how to prepare poached chicken with a bainiku (umeboshi)
sauce, summer miso soup with grilled eggplant and steamed egg custard
with barbecued eel for this demonstration workshop. There will be
an opportunity for hands-on arranging and the participants will
be able to sample the dishes that are prepared.
The cost for this workshop is $30 for JCCCNC members and $35 for

Pine UMC To Host Knitting Workshop

Knitting for Others, an afternoon gathering of needle workers, will
take place on Sunday, July 20 from 1 p.m. at Pine United Methodist
Church, 426 33rd Ave., in San Francisco. The group is currently
working on afghans to donate to those in need. All are invited.

large bathrooms, two large areas and the second floor carpets that have served the seniors for the past 25 years.
When you arrive on Thursday, July 24, just mention "Kimochi" to your wait person. Kansai Bistro will give each person in your party either a complimentary glass
of wine or bowl of ice cream as a thank you. Kansai Bistro will donate 15% of your check, including anything from the bar (excluding tax and gratuities) to the

Japanese Language Courses Offered at Nobiru-Kai
Japanese language courses for beginner and advanced students are now
in session at the Nobiru-Kai office located at 1840 Sutter St. Suite
#207 in San Francisco's Japantown. Students can study Japanese in
a ligh-t mood at competitive prices. Classes offered are:
*Level 1 (beginning) - Saturdays 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
*Level 2 (Beginning) - Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
*Level 4 (Advanced) - Saturdays 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The tuition is $7 per class for Nobiru-Kai members and $10 per class
for non-members. There re is a $10 fee for each session after the
